Hollymead Hornets Resource Rescue Program

You may have heard your kids talk about giving their uneaten school lunch food to other children or even horses, goats and chickens.  In an effort to keep good food out of the trash, parents have been volunteering to educate the kids during their lunch period on how to recycle the uneaten food.

Food is not permitted to return to the kitchen once it has left therefore, untouched food such as whole pieces of fruit, bagged carrots, applesauce cups, cartons of milk, and packaged crackers are collected in baskets at the end of lunch.  These items are then made available to share with any student that would like additional food.  At the end of the day any leftover food items are made available to the children in the EDEP after-school program.  If any food is left over at the end of the week, volunteer parents take the food to a local program that packs weekend food bags for the food insecure children at Hollymead.  Food that is partially eaten or opened is collected for farm animals belonging to teachers and staff at Hollymead.

The kids have been super supportive and excited to participate.  We take great care in making sure the children understand they should eat the food or take it home first.  We are only there to collect food that would be going in the trash.  If you have questions or want to help, contact Allison Agarwal at amurch9@msn.com .

How Can I Help?

The PTO is looking to fill some key roles this year. You can lead an event with a friend (or friends!) to collaborate and share the responsibility.

  1. Spirit Wear Coordinator: We are looking for someone to take over the ordering of our T-shirts, Water Bottles, and other spirit items. This person would be responsible for ordering, as well as selling during key events.
Timing: Full school year. Commitment: Medium.
  1. Read-A-Thon Coordinator: The PTO is hoping to revamp the Read-A-Thon this year, focusing it more on promoting reading and books, and less on fundraising. We are in search of someone with creative ideas.
Timing: Coordinator to determine. Commitment: Large effort for 4-6 weeks.
  1. Assembly Coordinator: This job needs someone committed to helping enhance the education of students through school-wide assembly offerings (bringing in outside programs to augment classroom learning).
Timing: Full school year. Commitment: Medium.
  1. Family Night Coordinators:There are several opportunities in this area to lead single events, such as Family Bingo Night (early October), Family Game Night (TBD), concessions at the Talent Show (Spring), etc.
Timing: TBD based on availability. Commitment: Small.
  1. Raffle Coordinator:We are looking for someone to redesign our Raffle, and maybe even consider doing a silent auction. The opportunity is wide open here and we’re hoping someone can bring new ideas.
    Timing: Spring. Commitment: Large.
  1. Staff Appreciation Coordinator:In late spring, we have a week dedicated to showing our appreciation for teachers and school staff. This position leads that effort, and is responsible for coordinating with our community to make the week a success.
